(a map) СТРАНОВЕДЧЕСКИЙ МАТЕРИАЛ British Homes The majority of the British population live in small houses built close together. A typical house is built with two floors. The front door, which faces the street, opens into a hall with two rooms, one on each side of the hall. One of them is the dining-room; the other may be called the sitting-room or the living-room. The rooms upstairs are bedrooms; they are often very small. Often the dining-room is the most comfortable room in the house. The family spends free time together in the dining-room. London parks are the most beautiful places of the city. In summer you can sit in St. James’s Park1 by the side of the lake and listen to the band playing music. Green Park2 is a different kind of park. It is a quiet, wooded place. Hyde Park was once part of a forest. In our days, Speakers’ Corner3 of the park is always a centre of activity. Sunday is the most popular day when you can see many people standing on their boxes and making speeches. There is a boating lake and skating in winter if the ice is 10 centimetres thick. There is an open-air theatre, a rose garden and a restaurant in Hyde Park. A Thistle Emblem The thistle has an important meaning for the people of Scotland. It is the Scottish national emblem. Why? The answer is interesting, you can find it in the history of Scotland. People say that during a surprise night attack the Scottish soldiers were awakened by the shouts of the barefooted invaders when they touched the thorns of the thistles in the field. 125
