In very early times people could only measure time by counting days and observing the phases of the moon and changes of the season. As early as 3,500 BC however sundials were being used in Egypt. Some sundials were portable and were used like watches. But others were enormous fixed structures like the famous sundials in India, which are 30 metres high. Mechanical clocks were invented in Europe in the fourteenth century but they were very inaccurate. In 1714 the British government offered a prize of £20,000 to the Iя person to invent a clock that could be used to calculate longitude. Only John Harrison’s fourth marine chronometer satisfied the government’s requirements. Quartz clocks are accurate to within one second in ten years and the majority of clocks and watches today use quartz crystals. You have 15 seconds to complete the task.
